Anthony Suter is Professor of Composition in the Conservatory of Music at the University of Redlands, a position he has held since joining the faculty in fall 2008. He teaches composition, writing for bands, and music education. Suter earned a B.M. from the University of Southern California, an M.M. from the University of Michigan, and a D.M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. His teachers included Donald Crockett, Stephen Hartke, Frank Ticheli, William Bolcom, Susan Botti, Bright Sheng, and Dan Welcher. In 2010, he received a university-wide award for Innovative Teaching from the University of Redlands. With a deep interest in music for younger musicians, Suter advocates for public school music programs and serves as a guest conductor and clinician for K–12 music programs.
Suter's music has been performed in nearly every major U.S. city and international venues. His works include three chamber operas, chamber and orchestral music, and several works for wind ensemble. Key performances encompass Electric Breakdown by the NOW Ensemble on a 2009 four-city tour; the same work by the University of Redlands Wind Ensemble at the 2010 College Band Directors National Association convention in Reno; his quartet chants and hymns of voices ephemeral by ensemble green in Los Angeles; and the world premiere of orchestral work grafted hymnologies by the Redlands Symphony in April 2011, conducted by Co Nguyen. Centaur Records released Hymns to Forgotten Moons: The Music of Arnold Schoenberg and Anthony Suter (CRC 3019), featuring two of his works performed by University of Redlands faculty. His music is published by Daehn Publications and Edizione Musicali Wicky Milan. He has received awards from the National Opera Association, College Band Directors National Association, ASCAP, Associazione Culturale Musicale "Euritmia," British and International Bass Forum, Concorso 2 Agosto, and Texas String Project.
