She founded and directs the Teaching, Learning, and Development Lab at NYU Abu Dhabi, focusing her research on child development, early childhood education, and caregiver-child interactions. Her work examines the interactional and contextual nature of learning and development, including schools' readiness to implement effective teaching strategies and improvements in young children's self-regulation and social competence skills. She investigates physiological and biological foundations of self-regulation and associations between classroom processes, teacher-child relationships, and these processes across cultures. Key publications include Behavioral self-regulation and relations to emergent academic skills among children in Germany and Iceland (Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 2013), A typical morning in preschool: Observations of teacher-child interactions in German preschools (Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 2014), Examination of teacher-child interactions in early childhood education programmes in the United Arab Emirates (International Journal of Early Years Education, 2020), Early childhood education and care quality and associations with child outcomes: A meta-analysis (PLoS One, 2023), and Parenting programs in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region: A multilevel meta-analysis (Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 2025).
