Antti Karkman serves as University Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Helsinki. He also holds the title of Docent in the same department and acts as a supervisor in the Doctoral Programme in Food Chain and Health as well as the Doctoral Programme in Microbiology and Biotechnology. Karkman maintains affiliations with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science. His research centers on microbiology and virology along with ecology and evolutionary biology, with documented work in areas such as antibiotic resistance in human impacted environments.
Karkman has contributed to multiple research projects including those examining antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater and the environment. He has served as project manager for initiatives such as the Nordic consortium on the role of biocides and STAR-DUST on wastewater treatment and the antibiotic resistome. Notable publications include Comparative genomics and characterization of highly adhesive and stress resistant Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strain E in 2025, Complete genome sequences of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strains E and E11.5 isolated from dairy products in 2025, Sulfonamide resistance gene sul4 is hosted by common wastewater sludge bacteria in 2025, Use of sequence barcodes for tracking horizontal gene transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes in 2025, and Alkali-Activated Foams Coated with Colloidal Ag for Point-of-Use Water Disinfection in 2024. Karkman has conducted visiting research at institutions including TU Dresden and the University of Tartu.
