Professor Arthur Christopoulos is the Professor of Analytical Pharmacology, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and inaugural Director of the Neuromedicines Discovery Centre at Monash University. He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy and a PhD in Pharmacology from the Victorian College of Pharmacy. Following postdoctoral research in the United States, he returned to Australia as a Research Fellow and joined Monash University in 2006 as an Associate Professor and NHMRC Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Pharmacology. He progressed to NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, Leader of the Drug Discovery Biology Theme in the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and his current leadership roles.
His research focuses on novel paradigms of drug action at G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), the largest class of drug targets, particularly allosteric modulation. Employing an interdisciplinary approach that includes computational and mathematical modelling, structural and chemical biology, molecular and cellular pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and preclinical disease models, his work targets neurological and psychiatric disorders, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and chronic pain. Professor Christopoulos has published extensively in journals such as Nature, Cell, Nature Chemical Biology, PNAS, and Nature Communications, with seminal discoveries of allosteric binding sites on GPCRs transforming drug discovery. He has received the John J. Abel Award (ASPET), Rand Medal (ASCEPT), Gaddum Memorial Award (BPS), IUPHAR Analytical Pharmacology Lecturer, GSK Award for Research Excellence, honorary Doctor of Laws (University of Athens), 2025 NHMRC Research Excellence Award, and fellowships including FAA (2021), FAHMS (2017), FBPS (2017), and ASPET (2024). A Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in Pharmacology & Toxicology and Biology & Biochemistry, he serves on eight international journal editorial boards, consults for companies, and is a Councillor of IUPHAR.
