Ashley Hyers is the Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance at Greensboro College, where she holds the position of Chair of the Department of Theatre and head of the Dance Program. Having joined the college in 1997, Hyers has amassed over 25 years of experience in higher education, specializing in teaching, program development, student mentoring, and artistic direction within the performing arts. She regularly choreographs productions for the Theatre Department, Music Department, and Dance Program, enriching the cultural and educational offerings at the institution. Her leadership roles have been pivotal in shaping the department's curriculum and activities, including open houses, theatre seasons, and collaborative performances.
In addition to her academic appointments, Hyers maintains certifications and affiliations in somatic education. She is a Certified Alexander Technique Teacher with Alexander Technique International (ATI), having completed her training at Chesapeake Bay Alexander Studies in 2007. She serves as a teaching member with The Poise Project, a program utilizing Alexander Technique principles to assist care partners and individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease. Hyers' academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in biology and French from Wofford College, earned in 1991, followed by a Master of Education in higher education administration with a biology concentration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1995.
Hyers has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to teaching and student advocacy. In 2018-2019, she received the Virginia Clarke Gray Award and the Student Advocate Award. Through her multifaceted career, Hyers continues to influence the academic field of performing arts by integrating her scientific background with artistic practice and somatic therapies.
