Rate My Professor Atsufumi Yokoi

Professor Atsufumi Yokoi serves as Vice President for Global Engagement and Director of the Global Engagement Center at Okayama University, with a joint appointment as Professor in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds the position of UNESCO Chairholder in Research and Education for Sustainable Development. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Engineering from Tokyo Metropolitan University (1996), a Master of Media and Governance from Keio University (1998), and a Master of Science in Urbanism from Delft University of Technology (2008). He also completed executive education programs at Harvard University and the University of Cambridge focused on sustainability leadership.

Yokoi’s career at Okayama University includes progressive leadership roles in international affairs and global engagement since 2015, following earlier professional experience as an architect at Takenaka Corporation and visiting research positions at institutions including the University of Cape Town and the University of Tokyo. His research interests encompass architectural design, urban planning, sustainable development, higher education, the SDGs, international education, and ESD. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and has received the French order of social merit “Officier de l’Ordre de l’Encouragement Public” as well as Okayama University’s President’s Award for Excellence in Education. Yokoi has contributed to publications including chapters in Humanistic Futures of Learning (UNESCO, 2020) and SDGs no Genten “Chikyū Kenshō” o Kangaeru (2022). He holds committee roles with organizations such as the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Japan, the UNU SDG-Universities Platform, and the Earth Charter International Council, and serves as an advisor to Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
