Dr. Avinash Kundur is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences within Griffith Health at Griffith University, Australia. He holds the position of Program Director for the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science. Kundur obtained his Master's degree in Medical Science from RMIT University (2009-2011) and completed his PhD at Griffith University. His academic career at Griffith University has progressed from PhD candidature starting in 2011 to his current senior lecturing role, where he contributes significantly to teaching and research in medical laboratory science.
Kundur's research focuses on platelet function, hemostasis, thrombosis, coagulation, oxidative stress, and their implications for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Notable publications include 'Bilirubin, platelet activation and heart disease: a missing link to cardiovascular protection in Gilbert's syndrome?' (2015, 144 citations), 'Oxidative stress biomarkers in type 2 diabetes mellitus for assessment of cardiovascular disease risk' (2018, 98 citations), 'Consumption of anthocyanin-rich Queen Garnet plum juice reduces platelet activation related thrombogenesis in healthy volunteers' (2015, 95 citations), 'Potential of anthocyanin as an anti-inflammatory agent: a human clinical trial on type 2 diabetic, diabetic at-risk and healthy adults' (2021, 61 citations), and 'Unconjugated bilirubin inhibits collagen induced platelet activation' (2014, 54 citations). He co-authored the book 'Haematology Case Studies with Blood Cell Morphology and Pathophysiology' (2017). With 39 publications and over 580 citations, his work explores the antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory effects of anthocyanins and bilirubin's protective role against platelet activation-related conditions. In teaching, he convenes courses such as Transfusion Science (3011MSC), Introduction to Clinical Pathology (1003MSC), and Clinical Placement I (4001MSC), and supervises master's students investigating coagulation risks. In 2022, as part of a team, he received a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) for the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science program, which trains work-ready medical laboratory scientists. Kundur has presented his research at the Griffith University 3-Minute Thesis finals in 2015 and serves in leadership roles within professional bodies, including the Queensland branch of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists.
