Dr Awf Shaban serves as an Adjunct Clinical Lecturer at Curtin Medical School within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. In this role, he engages in clinical teaching and student supervision, leveraging his professional expertise to support the medical education curriculum. His office is situated in Building 310, Health Sciences One, on the Curtin Perth campus, as part of the Office of the Provost portfolio.
Dr Shaban is also affiliated with the Department of Nephrology at Royal Perth Hospital and practices as a nephrologist at Cardio Metabolic Services in Joondalup. His clinical focus encompasses glomerulonephritis, renal diseases in haematology and oncology patients, cardio-renal syndrome, hypertension, and drug-induced kidney disorders. As a dual trainee in Nephrology and General Medicine, he has demonstrated interest in glomerular diseases, particularly those linked to haematological conditions. Dr Shaban co-authored the case report 'Tenofovir-induced Fanconi syndrome causing type 2 renal tubular acidosis initially mistaken as euglycaemic ketoacidosis' published in the Internal Medicine Journal (2025, volume 55, issue 11, pages 1962-1966), detailing the diagnostic and management challenges of tenofovir-associated renal tubular dysfunction. He further contributed to research on glomerular monoclonal gammopathies in Western Australia, published in Nephrology (September 2023), collaborating with Aron Chakera and others. Through these academic and clinical appointments, Dr Shaban advances nephrology education and practice within the Health Sciences at Curtin University.
