Great Professor!
Ayman Ellakwa is Associate Professor in the Sydney Dental School, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, where he serves as Head of the Prosthodontics Area. He has held the associate professor position since 2014, following appointments as lecturer in 2007 and senior lecturer. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) with distinction from Tanta University Faculty of Dentistry in 1990, Master of Science (MSc) in 1996 from the same institution, PhD from the University of Sydney in 2002, specialist qualification in Prosthodontics from the Australian Dental Council (ADC) in 2007, and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS).
Professor Ellakwa's research specializations center on restorative dentistry, dental biomaterials and bioengineering, and the quality of clinical training for dental graduates. He has published extensively on topics including mechanical properties of 3D-printed resins, biocompatibility of nanoparticle-reinforced dental materials, fluoride release from restorations, and glass fibre composites. Key publications include 'Mechanical and Biocompatibility Properties of 3D-Printed Dental Resin Reinforced with Silica-Coated Zirconia Nanoparticles' (Polymers, 2023), 'The Clinical Potential of 3D-Printed Crowns Reinforced with Zirconia Glass and Glass Silica Microfillers' (Journal of Functional Biomaterials, 2023), 'Effect of Printing Layer Thickness and Postprinting Conditions on the Flexural Strength and Hardness of a 3D-Printed Resin' (International Journal of Dentistry, 2022), and 'Long-Term Fluoride Exchanges at Restoration Surfaces and Effects on Secondary Caries' (International Journal of Dentistry, 2013). Ellakwa contributed to a Cooperative Research Centre Projects (CRC-P) grant totaling $8.3 million for developing new glass fibre composite materials (2019), collaborating with researchers from UNSW and the University of Wollongong. His extensive teaching experience encompasses clinical restorative dentistry and prosthodontics, guided by a research-led philosophy to enhance Sydney Dental School graduate training. Ellakwa also holds leadership roles, including Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry.
