Great Professor!
Professor Balwant Singh serves as Professor of Soil Science in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney. He completed his BSc (Hons) Agr and MSc Agr at Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, India, followed by MSc (Soils) and PhD at the University of Western Australia. With a career at the University of Sydney dating back to 1998, he has accumulated over 35 years of experience in research and teaching focused on soil science. Professor Singh has demonstrated leadership by serving as acting Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences and contributing to various university governance roles through committee service.
His research specializations encompass soil chemistry, including clay mineralogy, soil organic matter interactions, biochar properties and applications, soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics, and synchrotron-based techniques for soil and sediment analysis. He is co-author of the classic textbook Environmental Soil Chemistry and has edited prominent volumes such as Biochar: A Guide to Analytical Methods and Synchrotron-Based Techniques in Soils and Sediments. Professor Singh maintains a prolific publication record of over 230 peer-reviewed articles, with more than 24,600 citations on Google Scholar. He has supervised 25 PhD students, 12 MSc students, and over 25 honours students. Notable awards include the Marion L. and Chrystie M. Jackson Soil Science Award from the Soil Science Society of America in 2013, and he is a fellow of four scientific societies. Additionally, he contributes to editorial boards and professional leadership in soil science.
