Dr Barbara Peddie holds a PhD in Microbiology, a Bachelor of Theology (BTheol), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Theology (PGDipTheol). She worked as a Scientific Officer in Microbiology within the Department of Nephrology at Christchurch Hospital until her retirement in 2002. Her research centered on infectious diseases, particularly urinary tract infections (UTIs), antibiotic resistance patterns, and the efficacy of antimicrobial agents in renal patients. She collaborated extensively with nephrologists at Christchurch Hospital and was affiliated with the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Otago, contributing to studies on UTI microbiology. Notable publications include "Antibiotic resistance in uncomplicated urinary tract infection in women" (2002, New Zealand Medical Journal, co-authored with D.A. Richards et al.); "Lomefloxacin compared with trimethoprim for the treatment of urinary tract infection" (Bailey et al.); "Enoxacin for the treatment of urinary tract infection" (1985, New Zealand Medical Journal); "Sulphamethizole in urinary tract infections" (1979, Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy); "Norfloxacin for the Treatment of Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections" (1983); "Single dose sulbactam/ampicillin for uncomplicated urinary tract infections" (1985); "Resistance of urinary tract isolates of Escherichia coli to trimethoprim" (1988); "Effects of betaines and urine on the antibacterial activity of antibiotics" (1993, Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy); "Asymptomatic Bacteriuria in Health and Glomerulonephropathies" (1988, Nephron); and "Ethanol Disinfection of Plastic-Adherent Micro-Organisms" (2006, Journal of Hospital Infection, Department of Pathology, Christchurch School of Medicine, University of Otago). She served as Secretary of the Christchurch Medical Research Society around 2002.
Rev Dr Barbara Peddie is an ordained presbyter in the Methodist Church of Aotearoa New Zealand, currently appointed to the Central South Island Synod. Her theological studies focused on systematic theology and ethics. She chairs the InterChurch Bioethics Council, integrating her scientific background with ethical perspectives on bioethics issues.
