Dr Barbara Trad serves as a Lecturer in Taxation Law at Curtin Law School within the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy from Griffith University in 2022 from the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics. Her PhD research investigated the reasons for business structure choices made by Australian small and medium enterprises, the attributes desired in those structures, the extensive adoption of discretionary trusts by SMEs, and the distinctive attributes discretionary trusts provide relative to other business forms. Before joining Curtin University, Trad taught Taxation Law and Accounting at Griffith University and acted as Higher Degree Research Candidate Representative for the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics during 2020–2022.
Trad's research specializations encompass taxation law issues impacting small businesses, including small business restructure roll-overs, dual income tax systems aimed at improving tax neutrality for Australian small businesses, SME advisors' business structure recommendations, and inhibitors to business structuring for SMEs. Key publications include 'Small business restructure roll-over: in need of its own restructure?' co-authored with Brett Freudenberg and John Minas (2022); 'Reasons behind SME advisor business structure recommendations' in Australian Tax Forum (2024); 'A Dual Income Tax System for Australian Small Business: Achieving Greater Tax Neutrality?' (2018); 'A Dual Income Tax System for Australian Small Business: The experts’ verdict' with Brett Freudenberg (2018); and 'All Things Being Equal: Small Business Structure Choice' with Brett Freudenberg (2017). She is available for higher degree by research supervision, including doctoral (PhD) programs, at Curtin Law School.
