About Bart

Bart Kosko is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering, as well as a Professor of Engineering and Law at USC Gould School of Law. He earned bachelor's degrees in philosophy and mathematical economics from USC in 1982, a master's degree in applied mathematics from the University of California, San Diego in 1983, a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Irvine, and a J.D. from Concord Law School. A licensed attorney in California state and federal courts, Kosko has dedicated his career to advancing neural and fuzzy systems within Engineering.

Kosko's research interests center on neural and fuzzy systems, with seminal contributions including fuzzy cognitive maps (1986, over 5,800 citations) and bidirectional associative memories (1988). He has published influential books such as Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems (Prentice-Hall, 1991), Fuzzy Engineering (Prentice-Hall, 1996), Fuzzy Thinking (Hyperion, 1993), Noise (Viking, 2006), Heaven in a Chip (Three Rivers Press, 2000), as well as recent works including Nanotime (Lume Books, 2019) and Cool Earth (Lume Books, 2020). He edited Neural Networks for Signal Processing (Prentice-Hall, 1991) and Intelligent Signal Processing with S. Haykin (IEEE Press, 2001). His publication record includes nearly 100 technical articles, such as recent papers on bidirectional backpropagation, noise-boosted recurrent backpropagation, and causal feedback fuzzy cognitive maps. Kosko has received the 2022 Hebb Award for neural learning from the International Neural Network Society, IEEE Fellowship for contributions to neural and fuzzy systems, fellowships from the INNS and International Fuzzy Systems Association, and best paper awards from IJCNN-2017, NAFIPS-2020, and NAFIPS-2021. A member of the USC Signal and Image Processing Institute and the USC Program in Neural, Informational, and Behavioral Sciences, he continues to influence the field through innovative research and teaching.
