Dr Beatrice Scicchitano is a highly regarded emergency medicine specialist practising in Western Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) degree and is a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM). As an Emergency Medicine Consultant at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospital, she also collaborates with the Western Australian Country Health Service (WACHS). Her professional engagements demonstrate a commitment to high-quality patient care in both hospital and remote settings.
In a notable 2018 incident, during her inaugural shift with Western Australia's Emergency Telehealth Service (ETS), Dr Scicchitano provided life-saving remote consultation from Perth. Interpreting ECG results transmitted via videolink, she diagnosed an ongoing myocardial infarction in nurse Ryan Franks located in a remote area and directed him to self-administer thrombolytic therapy, averting potential fatality. This extraordinary case underscored the efficacy of telemedicine in rural healthcare and received coverage in medical media. Additionally, Dr Scicchitano contributed to peer-reviewed literature with the 2014 publication 'Abdominal migraine in childhood: a review' in Pediatric Health, Medicine and Therapeutics, a comprehensive narrative review drawing from 328 studies across PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar sources spanning two decades. The paper delineates diagnostic criteria, identifies red flags necessitating further investigation, and addresses management strategies for this pediatric condition. She has served as faculty for the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine's (ACEM) SUPER Course in Western Australia in 2023 and appears in annual reports of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) for 2016-2017 and 2018-2019. In June 2024, she spoke at the Girls in STEM Careers Café event at John Forrest Secondary College, promoting STEM fields to students alongside experts from various institutions.
