Rebecca (Becca) Krukowski, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Co-lead of the Community Cancer Control and Obesity Research Center. She earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Vermont (2002-2007), completed a medical psychology internship at Duke University Medical Center (2006-2007), and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Public Health. Previously, she served as Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center from 2017 to 2021. Her research focuses on using technology to increase access to evidence-based behavioral weight management interventions, self-monitoring behaviors, health equity, and reaching rural communities and underserved populations to reduce cancer risk. Specific interests include behavioral weight management for adults, technology-based interventions, gestational weight gain interventions, and interventions for postpartum women and young adults quitting smoking.
Krukowski has led or co-led multiple NIH-funded R01 grants, including R01DK107747 on the efficacy of novel post-cessation weight gain interventions, R01DK104872 on behavioral weight management for pregnant and postpartum women in the military, and a 2026 five-year $3.4 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to develop personalized feedback systems for weight management. She received the Dean's Excellence in Faculty Research Award, the Leading the Narrative science communication award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine, and was appointed to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Roundtable on Obesity Solutions. A Fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and The Obesity Society, her highly cited publications include "eHealth interventions for the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults: a systematic review with meta-analysis" (Obesity Reviews, 2015; 508 citations), "Academic productivity differences by gender and child age in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic" (Journal of Women's Health, 2021; 368 citations), "Internet delivered behavioral obesity treatment" (Preventive Medicine, 2010; 257 citations), and "Overweight children, weight-based teasing and academic performance" (International Journal of Pediatric Obesity, 2009; 252 citations). She serves as Associate Editor of Contemporary Clinical Trials, editorial board member of the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, and on NIH study sections and data safety monitoring boards.
