Professor Beibei Tang is the Dean and Professor in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), having joined in early 2026. A sociologist and leading scholar in China Studies, she specializes in China’s social and political development, with a consistent focus on social change and social development. Her academic training spans institutions across China, the United Kingdom, and Australia, including studies at Wuhan University, the University of Oxford, and the Australian National University. Before her current role, Tang held prominent leadership positions at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University from 2015 to 2025. She served as Head of the Department of China Studies from 2017 to 2020, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences from 2020 to 2025, and Acting Director of the University Research Centre for Culture, Communication, and Society from 2022 to 2025. These roles underscore her extensive experience in academic administration and interdisciplinary research leadership.
Tang has published widely in high-impact journals and with major academic presses such as Routledge and Cornell University Press, contributing significantly to the understanding of China’s social dynamics through frameworks that resonate internationally. Her scholarly impact is evidenced by the 2015 China Quarterly Gordon White Prize, recognizing her research excellence. She holds key editorial positions on the boards of The China Journal and The China Quarterly, serves as a member of the Humanities and Social Sciences Panel of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, and is an Honorary Professor at the China Studies Centre of the University of Sydney. In her leadership at BNBU’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tang emphasizes inclusivity, balance between tradition and modernity, theory and practice, school and society, local and global perspectives, and the integration of digital technologies to foster interdisciplinary education and high-impact research.
