Professor Ben Schreer is an expert in security and strategic studies at Macquarie University, where he holds the position of Honorary Professor in the School of International Studies. Previously, he served as Professor of Strategic Studies and Head of the Department of Security Studies and Criminology (SSC) within the Faculty of Arts from 2015 to July 2021. In this role, he also acted as Acting Dean of the School of Law. His research and teaching emphasize security and strategic studies, with a primary focus on the Asia-Pacific region, including Australian defence and foreign policy, US Asia-Pacific strategy, and strategic developments in Northeast Asia. Schreer has delivered public lectures, such as at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore in 2015, and contributed to policy discussions on defence and security issues.
Prior to joining Macquarie University, Schreer was Senior Analyst for Defence Strategy at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre (SDSC) at the Australian National University (ANU), Deputy Director of the Aspen Institute Germany, Research Group Leader in the Centre of Excellence at the University of Konstanz, and Research Fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, SWP). His scholarly impact is evidenced by over 1,845 citations on Google Scholar. Key publications include 'The Atlantic Alliance and Strategic Defense' (2008), 'Creating the Next Generation of NATO Partnerships' (2010), 'Planning the Unthinkable War: "AirSea Battle" and its Meaning for Australia' (2013), 'A Versatile Force: The Future of Australia’s Special Operations Capability' (2014, co-authored with Andrew Davies and Peter Jennings), and 'Australia and the Rules-Based Order in Asia' (2018). Schreer serves on the editorial boards of the Journal for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism and the Australian Journal of International Affairs. He is an Associate Fellow in the IISS Asia-Pacific programme and was Senior Visiting Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs in 2019. Currently, he is Executive Director of IISS-Europe and Head of the European Security and Defence Programme.
