About Berit

Berit Brogaard is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Miami, where she holds the position of Senior Cooper Fellow and serves as Director of the Brogaard Lab for Multisensory Research. Her research specializes in philosophy of perception, philosophy of emotions, philosophy of language, cognitive neuroscience, empirical philosophy of mind, and philosophical psychology. Brogaard obtained her Ph.D. in Cognitive Linguistics and Philosophy from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2000, a Doctor of Medical Science (D.M.Sci.) in Neuroscience and Biochemistry from the University of Copenhagen in 1996, and combined B.S./B.A./M.A. degrees from the University of Copenhagen in 1996, majoring in Biochemistry, Literature, and Linguistics.

Throughout her career, Brogaard has held prominent academic appointments, including Full Professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis from 2012 to 2014, Professor II and Professorial Fellow at the University of Oslo from 2014 to 2019, Associate Professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis from 2008 to 2012, and Assistant Professor there from 2005 to 2008, as well as earlier positions at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has been recognized with major awards and honors such as an Honorary Doctorate in Psychology from Aalborg University in 2024, the Cooper Fellowship at the University of Miami since 2019, Engaged Fellowship from 2020 to 2022, Trail-Blazer Award from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2014, and Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014. Brogaard is a prolific author and editor, with key books including Hatred: Understanding Our Most Dangerous Emotion (Oxford University Press, 2020), Seeing and Saying (Oxford University Press, 2018), The Superhuman Mind (Penguin, 2015), On Romantic Love: Simple Truths about a Complex Emotion (Oxford University Press, 2015), and Transient Truths: An Essay in the Metaphysics of Propositions (Oxford University Press, 2012). She has edited several volumes, such as Does Perception Have Content? (Oxford University Press, 2014) and The Philosophy and Psychology of Ambivalence (Routledge, 2021). Additionally, she serves in significant editorial roles, including Journal Editor for Philosophy and Phenomenological Research since 2021 and Editor for Erkenntnis since 2009. Her scholarship has significantly influenced the field, evidenced by over 5,000 citations on Google Scholar.
