Julio Barredo, M.D., is a Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He serves as the Toppel Family Endowed Professor in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, and Director of Children's Cancer Programs at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. A Peruvian native, Dr. Barredo earned his MD from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru, in 1982. With over 30 years of medical experience and more than 25 years practicing pediatric oncology, he has been at the University of Miami for 18 years, where he has developed an ACGME-accredited pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship program and led the creation of alex’s place, a specialized pediatric oncology clinic at Sylvester to improve patient care.
Dr. Barredo's research centers on pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), examining the adaptive survival mechanisms of cancer cells under energy and metabolic stress. The Barredo Lab targets tumor metabolism and exploits vulnerabilities in relapsed/refractory ALL and other acute leukemias, elucidating the non-canonical epigenetic function of AMPK in promoting cancer cell survival during stress conditions. His work bridges laboratory discoveries with clinical practice to advance therapies for pediatric hematologic malignancies. Internationally recognized for his expertise, Dr. Barredo advises Peru’s Ministry of Health on childhood ALL, contributing to national treatment protocols, regional referral centers, and infrastructure improvements to elevate cure rates. His scholarly output includes over 2,000 citations and key publications such as "Hydroxycarbamide in very young children with sickle-cell anaemia: A multicentre, randomised, controlled trial (BABY HUG)" (2011) and participation in the MAP regimen trial for high-risk osteosarcoma (2015). He has received the Micah Batchelor Award for excellence in pediatric research.
