Dr. Betty Allen serves as Associate Professor and Director of the School of Nursing at the University of Mount Union. She holds an LPN from Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing, an ASN from Purdue University, a BSN from Valparaiso University, an MSN in Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist from Malone College, and an EdD in Healthcare Education from Nova Southeastern University. Allen joined the University of Mount Union in 2015 and has progressed through roles including Assistant Professor of Nursing and Assistant Department Chair before assuming her current position. Under her leadership, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program has earned accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for ten years following a 2020 site visit, with the next review scheduled for fall 2030. The program is also approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing for five years effective May 2022. The nursing graduates from the Class of 2024 achieved a 100% first-time pass rate on the NCLEX-RN exam, exceeding the national average of 94%. Since the program's inception in 2013, NCLEX first-time pass rates have remained above 92% for all cohorts, with a 92% BSN completion rate for students entering the sophomore nursing sequence, 95% of graduates recommending the program, and 100% employment as nurses within six months of graduation.
Allen's professional contributions include recognition for five years of service in 2020 and ten years in 2025. She is certified as RN, CNE, and CCRN. In nursing education research, she co-authored the peer-reviewed article 'Measuring Nursing Student Development Through Computer-Based Simulation Activities,' published in Nurse Educator in 2023, which examined computer-based simulations to assess decision-making and psychological capital in BSN students using tools like the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric and Nursing Anxiety and Self-Confidence scale. Her work emphasizes fostering excellence among students in a collaborative environment where they support one another. Allen's dedication has positioned the School of Nursing as a leader in preparing competent, resilient nurses through immersive clinical experiences in areas such as adult care, pediatrics, maternity, critical care, and community health at partner facilities including Aultman Health Foundation and Akron Children’s Hospital.
