About Bin

Professor Bin Liu is Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor and Deputy President (Research and Technology) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). She previously served as Senior Vice Provost (Faculty and Institutional Development) from 2022 to 2023, Vice President (Research and Technology) from 2019 to 2021, and Head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from 2017 to 2022. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemistry from Nanjing University and a PhD in chemistry from NUS awarded in 2001. After completing postdoctoral research at the University of California, Santa Barbara, she joined NUS as faculty in 2005, advancing through promotions to associate professor in 2010, Dean’s Chair Professor in 2014, and Provost’s Chair Professor in 2017 before her current appointments.

Her research focuses on the design and synthesis of organic functional nanomaterials, including conjugated polymers and aggregation-induced emission materials, with applications in sensing, imaging, and cancer therapy. She co-founded the NUS startup Luminicell to commercialize her AIE-based luminescent materials. Professor Liu has received numerous honors, including the Singapore National Science and Technology Young Scientist Award in 2008, L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science National Fellowship in 2011, Singapore President’s Science and Technology Awards in 2016, American Chemical Society Nano Lectureship Award in 2019, Royal Society of Chemistry Centenary Prize in 2021, IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering in 2023, election as Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Sciences, Academy of Engineering Singapore, National Academy of Inventors, and US National Academy of Engineering, as well as recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher in Materials Science and Chemistry. She has authored or co-authored hundreds of publications and holds more than 30 patents, many licensed globally.
