About Alberto

Alberto Corrias is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), within the College of Design and Engineering. He serves as Deputy Head for Education and Student Life. He directed the Engineering Scholars Programme from 2018 to 2024 and the Global Engineering Programme from November 2018 to June 2020. Previously, he was Senior Lecturer at NUS from 2016 to 2019, lecturer prior to that, and was promoted to Associate Professor effective January 1, 2019. Corrias obtained a five-year degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano Technical University in Milan, Italy. He worked for two years in the pharmaceutical industry at AstraZeneca before receiving his PhD in Bioengineering from NUS in 2009. Following this, he completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University, UK, during which he contributed to the development of Chaste, an open-source C++ library for computational physiology and biology.

Corrias leads the Computational Bioengineering Lab at NUS, where his research applies computational methods to medical problems, particularly electrophysiological modeling of the heart and gastrointestinal tract. His Google Scholar profile lists computational biology as a primary interest, with over 1,549 citations. Notable publications include "Chaste: an open source C++ library for computational physiology and biology" (PLoS Computational Biology, 2013; 567 citations), "A multiscale investigation of repolarization variability and its role in cardiac arrhythmogenesis" (Biophysical Journal, 2011; 156 citations), "A quantitative model of gastric smooth muscle cellular activation" (Annals of Biomedical Engineering, 2007; 117 citations), "Quantitative cellular description of gastric slow wave activity" (American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 2008; 106 citations), and "Sleep, well-being and academic performance: A study in a Singapore residential college" (Frontiers in Psychology, 2021; 69 citations). He received the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award in 2017 and 2018. Corrias is a Fellow of the College of Alice and Peter Tan, a Fellow of the NUS Teaching Academy, and an academic mentor in the Design and Engineering Scholars Programme.
