Dr Binod Aryal is a Chartered Professional Engineer serving as Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Engineering and Technology at UNSW Canberra. He earned his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of New South Wales in 2019, with a thesis titled 'Mechanical Behaviour of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Laminates and Honeycomb Sandwich Panels Subjected to Low-Velocity and High-Velocity Ballistic Impacts.' For this doctoral research conducted at UNSW Canberra, he received the Dean's Award for Outstanding PhD Theses in Round 1 of 2020. Aryal possesses substantial experience in aerostructures research, intra-sector collaboration, innovation, government services across Defence, academia, and public service, as well as leadership roles. He excels in cross-functional engineering skills complemented by strong management abilities, enabling the development of tailored engineering solutions. Multilingual and adept in diverse environments, he has contributed to advisory roles with Engineers Australia and serves as a Non-Executive Director for a not-for-profit organisation in the Australian Capital Territory. Aryal holds multiple awards in engineering research and teaching.
His research focuses on the structural response and damage mechanisms in composite materials under various impact conditions, critical for aerospace and defence applications. Key publications include 'Effects of ballistic impact damage on mechanical behaviour of composite honeycomb sandwich panels' (2021, Journal of Sandwich Structures and Materials, co-authored with E.V. Morozov and K. Shankar); 'Effects of impactor mass on the low-velocity impact behaviour of thick GFRP pultruded laminates' (2021, Construction and Building Materials, co-authored with Z. Li et al.); and 'Effects of impact energy, velocity, and impactor mass on the damage induced in composite laminates and sandwich panels' (2019, Composite Structures). Additional works encompass conference papers such as 'Structural Response of Ballistically Damaged Composite Honeycomb Sandwich Structures' (2019, ICCM22, Melbourne); 'Compressive behaviour of carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic lattice structures' (2019, Advances in Engineering Materials, Structures and Systems, Cape Town); and 'Effects of Ballistic Impact Damage on Mechanical Performance of Composite Honeycomb Sandwich Panels' (2017, ICCS20, Paris). These contributions enhance understanding of impact-induced damage in advanced composite structures.
