Bongsik Shin, Ph.D., serves as Professor and Department Chair of the Management Information Systems Department in the Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University, a position he has held since August 2020. He joined SDSU in 1999 as an Assistant Professor, advancing to Associate Professor in 2003 and full Professor in 2007. Prior to SDSU, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha from 1997 to 1999. Shin holds a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona (1997), an M.S. in Statistics from Bernard Baruch College (1992), and a B.A. in English Language and Literature from Sogang University (1986). His research focuses on cybersecurity and applied artificial intelligence, with additional interests in computer networking and business intelligence. He has authored or co-authored 34 peer-reviewed articles in premier information systems journals such as MIS Quarterly, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Journal of Management Information Systems, and European Journal of Information Systems. Notable publications include "Assessing the Reliability of Formative Measurement in Structural Equation Modeling" (MIS Quarterly, 2010, co-authored with Kim and Grover), which has garnered significant citations, and "Understanding Dynamics Between Initial Trust and Usage Intentions of Mobile Banking" (Information Systems Journal, 2009). Shin is also the author of the book "A Practical Introduction to Enterprise Network and Security Management" (CRC Press, 2017; 2nd edition, 2021).
Shin has received several prestigious awards, including the Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributions to the University (2019/20), the Fowler College of Business Teaching Excellence Award (2017), the Outstanding Faculty Contribution Award in Research (2011), and Faculty Fellow at the JSB Center for Artificial Intelligence (2023/24). His work has been supported by grants from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and Department of Homeland Security. In teaching, he covers cybersecurity, computer network management, and business intelligence topics including statistics and databases. Shin's contributions extend to mentoring students in research and serving on committees such as curriculum redesign. His global research ranking placed him in the top 100 scholars based on publications in top IS journals in multiple years between 2010 and 2015.
