Brent Scafidas is a Lecturer at the University of Notre Dame Australia’s School of Law, Fremantle campus. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Western Australia. Admitted as a Solicitor and Conveyancer of the High Court in South Africa in 1999, and to practice in New South Wales and Western Australia in 2005, Brent brings extensive practical experience to his academic role. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2009, he worked at a prominent South African law firm, established his own practice, served as state manager of a niche national law firm from 2005 to 2009, and lectured sessional courses at the University of South Africa in subjects including Forensic Jurisprudence, Commercial Law, Succession, Conveyancing & Notarial Practice, Labour Law, Tax, and Legal Office Administration. Since 2009, he has maintained a specialist consultancy in Private Lending and Property Law, ensuring his teaching remains current and practice-oriented.
Brent teaches Corporations Law, Commercial Law, Commercial Practice and Ethics, Lender Liability, and Property Law. His research interests encompass Commercial Law, Privacy and Education Law, Minors and Responsibility for Torts, and Sports Law. He has supervised honours theses on topics such as Duty of Disclosure for Listed Companies, Planning Appeals in Western Australia, Regulation of Crowd-Sourced Equity Funding in Australia, Misuse of Market Power, The Gig Economy and the Rise of Uber, The Modern Slavery Act and its Application to Large Corporations, Addressing the Power Imbalance in the Franchising Code, and Trusts and Taxation in Australia. Additionally, he served as second supervisor for the 2017 Master of Laws thesis "Future digital money: The legal status and regulation of bitcoin in Australia." From 2012 to 2020, Brent served as Assistant Dean of Students, and in 2021 as National Head of School Delegate. He holds a current practising certificate from the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia, is a member of the Law Society of Western Australia and the Australia and New Zealand Sports Law Association, and contributes to community engagement via the WA Public Interest Clearing House Reference Group.
