Dr. Brett Labbe serves as Department Chair and Associate Professor of Communication Studies in the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at Indiana University South Bend. He holds a BA in Communication from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, an MA in Mass Communication Research from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a PhD in Media & Communication from Bowling Green State University. In June 2024, the Indiana University Board of Trustees approved his promotion to Associate Professor with tenure. Previously serving as Assistant Professor, Labbe has been recognized for his teaching excellence with the Trustees' Teaching Award in 2020. He also contributes to campus governance as a member of the General Education Committee.
Proceeding from a political economy perspective, Brett Labbe's research focuses on international media and political communication, specifically the intersections between culture, globalization, and the media. He has written extensively on global news flows, news framing, and media industries within the context of globalization. Additionally, he has published work in the areas of intercultural communication and agenda setting on social media. Key publications include 'US news media's framing of the 'North Korean crisis' under the Trump administration: The new normal?' in Media, War & Conflict (2024) and 'Social media and flu: Media Twitter accounts as agenda setters' in the International Journal of Medical Informatics (2016, co-authored with Gi Woong Yun, David Morin, SangHee Park, Claire Youngnyo Joa, Jongsoo Lim, Sooyoung Lee, and Daewon Hyun). At Indiana University South Bend, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses such as COMM-J510 Media & Society Seminar, JOUR-C200 Introduction to Mass Communication, JOUR-J522 Political Communication, SPCH-S121 Public Speaking, and TEL-R404 Topical Seminar in Telecommunication (International Media & Globalization). His scholarly contributions enhance understanding of media dynamics in global and political contexts.
