Brett Smith is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University, Lismore campus, where he holds the position of Program Coordinator for Veterinary Technology and serves as Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology. He earned a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAppSc) in Veterinary Technology from the University of Queensland and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGradDipEd). As a Veterinary Technology graduate, Smith has become an integral figure in advancing veterinary education at the university. His academic expertise centers on Veterinary Technology curriculum and pedagogy, guiding the design and implementation of programs that prepare students for professional practice in animal health and welfare.
Smith has played a pivotal role in the development of Southern Cross University's new Bachelor of Veterinary Technology course, scheduled to commence in 2025 at the Northern Rivers Lismore campus, alongside the forthcoming Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in 2026. This initiative responds to the critical shortage of veterinary professionals both regionally and nationally, establishing what is described as Australia's latest veterinary education precinct. In curriculum development, he has collaborated closely with the university library to integrate Open Educational Resources (OER) into veterinary science courses. Smith has highlighted the benefits of this partnership, noting that library expertise in sourcing and reviewing open-source materials significantly reduces academic workload, facilitates selection of high-quality resources, and streamlines the curriculum design process, making it more efficient and less stressful. He underscores the essential communication skills of veterinary technologists, who interact directly with pet owners, farmers, and livestock handlers to deliver education and guidance on animal care and welfare, thereby exerting a substantial influence on how people perceive and manage their animals. Smith has engaged in public outreach through participation in the Southern Cross University Open Day 2024 Veterinary panel and presentations at Primex 2024, expressing enthusiasm for expanding veterinary training opportunities in the region.
