Dr. Brian Hunt is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics at Johnson C. Smith University, a position he has held within the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). He joined the university in 2007 as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the then Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, where he also served as Math Lab Coordinator. Hunt earned his B.A. in 1995 from the State University of New York College at Geneseo, his M.S. in 1998 from Clemson University, and his Ph.D. in 2004 from Clemson University. Throughout his tenure at JCSU, he has demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and departmental leadership, overseeing faculty and programs that prepare students for careers in high-demand STEM fields.
As department chair, Dr. Hunt manages a comprehensive suite of programs, including undergraduate B.S. degrees in Computer Engineering, Computer Science/Information Systems, Information Systems Engineering, and Mathematics with a concentration in Pre-Mathematical Finance. The department also offers minors in Bioinformatics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Cyber-Intelligence and Technology, Data Science, and Mathematics, alongside graduate programs and minors in Bioinformatics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, and Mathematics. Beyond administration, Hunt actively contributes to university governance as President of the Faculty Senate for the 2025-26 academic year and as a member of the Quality Enhancement Plan team focused on cultivating a culture and curriculum for research. He led students in reciting the Honor Code at the 2025 freshman convocation, emphasizing integrity, honesty, and accountability, and has been acknowledged by graduating students for his guidance. His work supports JCSU's mission through rigorous curricula requiring 122-125 credit hours, including liberal studies and electives, culminating in honors options for high-achieving students.
