Dr. Brian Lines serves as the David A. Ross Chair’s Council Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering within the University of Kansas School of Engineering, a position he has held since joining the faculty in 2014. He earned his Ph.D. in Construction Management in 2014, M.S. in Construction Management in 2011, and B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 2010, all from Arizona State University. A licensed Professional Engineer in Kansas since 2018 and a Facility Management Professional since 2013, Lines specializes in Construction Management. His research focuses on alternative procurement, competitive proposal preparation, alternative contracting methods, risk management, project delivery, and performance measurement. With extensive owner-side experience managing design, engineering, construction, facilities, IT, and non-construction projects totaling over $989 million, he brings practical insights to his academic work. Lines previously served as a Research Assistant under Prof. Kenneth T. Sullivan at Arizona State University’s Del E. Webb School of Construction from 2010 to 2014.
Lines has received the Chancellors Club Teaching Professorship in 2025, the Undergraduate Teaching Award at the first annual CEAE Award Banquet in 2024, the Chair’s Council Assistant Professor designation in 2019, and the Early Career Award from ELECTRI International in 2016. His scholarly contributions include highly cited publications such as “Overcoming resistance to change in engineering and construction: Change management factors for owner organizations” (2015, 292 citations), “Change management practices for adopting new technologies in the design and construction industry” (2020, 81 citations), “Drivers of organizational change within the AEC industry: Linking change management practices with successful change adoption” (2017, 69 citations), and “Using best-value procurement to measure the impact of initial risk-management capability on qualitative construction performance” (2017, 55 citations). Additional notable works feature in ASCE journals, including “Differentiation of Evaluation Criteria in Design-Build and Construction Manager at Risk Procurements” (2019) and “Best-Value Procurement in Design-Bid-Build Construction Projects: Empirical Analysis of Selection Outcomes” (2018), the latter recognized as a top downloaded article. Lines has delivered over 52 invited external presentations and two keynote speeches since 2014, serves on multiple ASCE committees, acts as faculty advisor to student organizations like the Associated General Contractors Student Club, and holds roles as Associate Editor for the International Journal of Facility Management Education & Research and on the editorial board of the International Journal of Construction Education and Research. His work influences construction education, procurement practices, and industry change management.
