About Bryan

Bryan Hooi is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department, School of Computing at the National University of Singapore. He is also affiliated with the Institute of Data Science. He joined NUS Computing as an Assistant Professor on 1 July 2019. Hooi received his PhD in Machine Learning from Carnegie Mellon University in 2019. Prior to that, he earned his Master of Science degree in Computer Science and his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Stanford University in 2014.

Hooi’s research interests include machine learning, graph mining, anomaly detection, spatiotemporal data, and the biomedical applications of artificial intelligence. His work has received recognition including the KDD 2016 Best Paper Award in the Research Track and the ECML-PKDD 2018 Runner-Up Best Student Data Mining Paper Award. In 2024, he received the NUS School of Computing Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. Selected publications include “FRAUDAR: Bounding Graph Fraud in the Face of Camouflage” (KDD 2016) and “GridWatch: Sensor Placement and Anomaly Detection in the Electrical Grid” (ECML-PKDD 2018). He teaches courses such as Database Systems and Big Data Systems for Data Science.
