Dr. Bryan Vescio serves as Chair and Professor of English in the Department of English at High Point University, which is part of the Douglas S. Witcher School of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences. He joined the university in 2015 after a 13-year tenure as a tenured professor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. During his time at UWGB, Vescio received four nominations for the university's student-selected teaching award. He also served as assistant coach for the Division I men's tennis team, helping secure four conference championships, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and maintaining consistently high grade point averages for the team.
Vescio earned his B.A. in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia. His research interests include 19th- and 20th-century American literature, Cormac McCarthy, philosophy and literature, critical theory, and film studies. He teaches courses in American literature, philosophy and literature, and critical theory. Vescio is the author of the book Reconstruction in Literary Studies: An Informalist Approach, published prior to his appointment at High Point University. In 2024, High Point University Provost Dr. Daniel Erb presented him with the Extraordinary Leadership Award in recognition of his contributions to the department. Vescio has further extended his influence through discussions on literary works, including multiple episodes of the Reading McCarthy podcast analyzing novels such as Suttree and Cities of the Plain.
