Rate My Professor Christopher O’Reilly

Dr. Christopher O'Reilly is a Lecturer and Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading. He studied for an undergraduate degree and a PhD at Imperial College London. He has held postdoctoral research positions at Hokkaido University in Japan and the University of Oxford. He is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Royal Meteorological Society journal Atmospheric Science Letters.

His research focuses on the dynamics of the Earth’s climate system, with a broad emphasis on understanding mechanisms of climate variability and change, as well as the predictability of future climate across a range of timescales. Key recent publications include “Evaluating seasonal forecast improvements over the past two decades” (2025, Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society), “Signal-to-noise errors in early winter Euro-Atlantic predictions linked to weak ENSO teleconnections and pervasive jet biases” (2025, Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society), and “Climate models struggle to simulate observed North Pacific jet trends, even accounting for tropical Pacific sea surface temperature trends” (2025, Geophysical Research Letters). He has contributed to numerous studies on topics such as North Atlantic ocean-atmosphere coupling, Atlantic Multidecadal Variability, and European climate projections, appearing in journals including Journal of Climate, Climate Dynamics, and npj Climate and Atmospheric Science.
