Dr Craig Johnston is Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of the West of England, Bristol, within the School of Social Sciences. He holds a PhD, MEd, MA, PGCE and BA (Hons), and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research interests centre on youth and social justice, with particular emphasis on alternative provision and school exclusion. Work in these areas received a world-leading rating in the Research Excellence Framework 2021. Johnston brings more than thirty years of professional experience across youth justice, psychology, education, social work and health in both the United Kingdom and the United States, during which he has led multi-agency teams at national and international levels.
He maintains extensive teaching commitments at doctoral, master’s and bachelor levels across criminology, education, youth work, health, sociology and social work programmes at several universities. Johnston has successfully supervised numerous doctoral students and has examined fifteen internal and external vivas. He has convened national and international conferences including Social Justice and Alternative Provision in 2023, Poverty and Working Class in 2023/24, Class and Culture in 2023 and Social Barriers and Higher Education in 2023. He serves as online editor of the Journal of Class and Culture, sits on the editorial board of the journal Youth, and is co-founder and vice-chair of the Alliance of Working Class Academics as well as co-founder of the Alternative Provision Research Network. He is also director of Children in Scotland and has contributed to funded research projects supported by the National Institute for Health Research and other organisations.
