Cameron Houin serves as the Director of Counselor Education Programs and Assistant Professor in the Counselor Education Programs within the School of Social Sciences at Viterbo University. Holding a PhD in Counselor Education from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville earned in 2019, an M.Ed. in Counselor Education from the University of Mississippi, and a B.A. in Religious Studies from Hendrix College, Houin is a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC). With over six years of clinical experience and more than four years in teaching and supervision, Houin joined Viterbo University in 2019 as the newest faculty member in the Counselor Education department. Prior clinical roles encompassed mental health counseling in elementary and middle schools, mental health agencies, college counseling centers, and a current private practice specializing in services for transgender adolescents and adults. Houin also serves on the Viterbo University Institutional Review Board committee, representing Mental Health Counseling since 2021.
Houin’s research specializations encompass multicultural competency in counselor supervision, the experiences of racial microaggressions among Black female counseling students at southern universities, the integration of expressive arts and sandtray techniques in counseling education and supervision, play therapy, and broader multicultural issues within counselor training. Key peer-reviewed publications include "Black Female Counseling Students’ Experiences of Racial Microaggressions at a Southern University" (2025), "Creating Counselors: Master’s Level Counseling Students’ Experience of Expressive Arts in a Multicultural Course" (2021), "Using Sandtray as a Creative Supervision Tool" (2020), and "Cultivating Multicultural Competency in Supervision Using an Identity Style Framework" (2019). Houin has contributed to professional development through presentations, such as on serving transgender and gender non-conforming youth and families at the Association for Play Therapy, and facilitating community forums on play therapy topics. Additionally, Houin teaches graduate courses in counselor education, including those on diversity, social justice, and professional leadership.
