Carl Rogers serves as Chair and Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture in the College of Design at Iowa State University of Science and Technology. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kansas State University, completed in 1993, and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design, obtained in 1997. These credentials underpin his expertise in architectural design and landscape principles. Rogers assumed the role of department chair following an interim appointment starting in July 2016, providing strategic direction for both the professional Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture programs. Under his leadership, the department has sustained national prominence, with the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program ranked tenth among the nation's best in 2018. He actively participates in university governance as a member of the Department Chairs Council within the Division of Academic Affairs and holds membership in the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Rogers' research specializations include the drawing and representation of art, architecture, and landscape architecture within the modern landscape; edge boundaries and their relation to environmental dynamics between landscapes and urban environments; and environmental art, particularly site-specific sculpture. His publications encompass 'All Hands on Deck: Instructors as Collaborators and the Modified Dynamics of Design Build Interaction,' presented at the 32nd National Conference on the Beginning Design Student in 2016, which examines instructor-student dynamics in design-build studios; 'Places, Spaces, and Faces: Teaching Sustainable Design through Cross-Disciplinary Studio Integration,' detailing collaborative architecture and landscape architecture studios focused on sustainability, including projects like the Hansen Prize Competition in 2007 and Iowa State campus redesigns in 2008; and works on community partnerships as foundations for scholarship, pedagogy, and research. Rogers has earned the College of Design Dean's Award for Extraordinary Performance. He leads key initiatives such as the Confluence Studio Prize competitions for outstanding student projects, the Iowa Mayors' Design Workshop selecting towns for design charrettes, and the Iowa Innovative Housing Project as a grant co-principal investigator, fostering community-engaged design and sustainable practices.
