About Carl

Carl Marcus Wallenburg is Professor and Chairholder of the Chair of Logistics and Services Management at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, where he also holds the position of Associate Dean of Graduate Programs. Born in 1973 in Partille, Sweden, he studied Industrial Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe and the University of Gothenburg and holds a doctoral degree in Business Administration. His career began at WHU as a scientific assistant to Professor Jürgen Weber and as managing director of the Kühne Center for Logistics Management, overseeing research and practical projects in service management and supply chain controlling. From 2009 to 2011, he served as Head of the Department of International Logistics Networks at Technische Universität Berlin. Since 2011, he has led his current chair at WHU, focusing his research and teaching on managerially relevant issues in international supply chain management using empirical methods.

Wallenburg's academic interests encompass vertical and horizontal cooperation in supply chains, logistics service providers and services, risk management, service management, digital transformation, logistics outsourcing relationships, innovation in logistics service providers, sustainability in supply chains, behavioral supply chain management, horizontal cooperations among logistics service providers, supply chain resilience, and performance measurement in logistics. He serves as European Editor of the Journal of Business Logistics. Key publications include 'The influence of relational competencies on supply chain resilience: A relational view' (Wieland and Wallenburg, 2013), 'Dealing with supply chain risks: linking risk management practices and strategies to performance' (Wieland and Wallenburg, 2012), 'Digital transformation at logistics service providers: barriers, success factors and leading practices' (Cichosz, Wallenburg, and Knemeyer, 2020), the book 'Logistik- und Supply Chain Controlling' (Weber and Wallenburg, 2010), and 'The human factor in SCM: introducing a meta-theory of behavioral supply chain management' (Schorsch, Wallenburg, and Wieland, 2017). He has garnered over 7,800 citations on Google Scholar. Major awards include multiple Emerald Highly Commended Paper Awards (2011, 2013, 2014, 2018), Emerald Outstanding Paper Award (2016), Best Reviewer Award from the Journal of Supply Chain Management (2008), and German Logistics Research Award (2004), underscoring his influence on the field.
