Dr. Carla J. Gallagher serves as Interim Chair and Associate Professor, and is listed as Professor, in the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. She earned her Ph.D. from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Her areas of expertise encompass biochemistry, pharmacogenetics, and the pharmacokinetics of cancer risk. The department, where she holds her position, offers Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (certified by the American Chemical Society), Physics, and Engineering Science, with faculty interests spanning analytical, physical, inorganic, organic, and biochemistry. Gallagher has progressed in her career at Lincoln University from Assistant Professor, as noted in 2019 records, to her current leadership role as Interim Chair. She is a contact for adjunct faculty positions in physical chemistry and contributes to writing proficiency program assessments for the department.
Gallagher's research output includes peer-reviewed publications such as 'Reduced total serum bilirubin levels are associated with ulcerative colitis' in PLOS ONE (2017), 'NNK reduction pathway gene polymorphisms and risk of lung cancer in African Americans' (2015), 'Use of the Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside (i2b2) Population to Identify Novel Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in Genes Associated with Ulcerative Colitis' presented at ACM BCB (2018), and 'Identifying potential monkeypox virus inhibitors: an in silico study targeting the A42R protein' (2024). She has co-authored work on vaccination effectiveness and other topics in chemistry and physics journals. As co-principal investigator with Whelton A. Miller, she secured a $400,000 National Science Foundation grant in 2019 for an innovative undergraduate project and NSF award 1818693 for the Targeted Infusion Project implementing an HBCU undergraduate bioinformatics program, along with NSF 1912104 supporting further initiatives. Gallagher mentors undergraduate students in research, including tobacco smoke cancer studies leading to early medical school acceptances and projects on repurposing antimalarial drugs as autophagy inhibitors presented at biomedical conferences. She serves on the Institutional Review Board, Science Fair Organizing Committee, and Penn State College of Medicine PROMISE Advisory Committee, contributing to STEM preparation for underrepresented minorities through grants and departmental efforts focused on graduate school readiness, professional development, and standardized exam preparation like MCAT and GRE.
