Carolyn (Carney) Sotto, PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow, is Professor-Educator and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Cincinnati College of Allied Health Sciences. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology with a minor in Psychology from San Diego State University, followed by a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Cincinnati. Sotto's academic career at the University of Cincinnati spans nearly four decades, starting as an Instructor of Speech-Language Pathology in 1985. She advanced through positions including Adjunct Assistant Professor from 1998 to 2001, Visiting Clinical Instructor from 2001 to 2006, Assistant Clinical Professor from 2006 to 2010, and Associate Clinical Professor of Speech-Language Pathology from 2010 to present. Since 2001, she has directed undergraduate studies in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and since 2006, she has served as Director of the First Year Experience for the College of Allied Health Sciences. Prior to her full-time faculty roles, Sotto worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist in private practices in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1985 to 1990 and in Tarzana, California, from 1991 to 1997, providing diagnostics, intervention, and in-service training for diverse caseloads.
Sotto has earned widespread recognition for her excellence in teaching, mentoring, and service. Notable awards include the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Fellowship in 2018, Outstanding First-Year Advocate Award from the University of Cincinnati in 2020, Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program Faculty Recognition in 2016, 2017, and 2018, Sarah Grant Barber Faculty Advisor Award in 2016, NSSLHA Chapter of the Year Award as advisor in 2011 and 2003, Faculty Advancement Award for Contributions to College Fundraising Efforts in 2016, and Honors of the Association from the Ohio Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2018. Her publications feature peer-reviewed articles such as 'Investigation of graduate student stress in speech-language pathology' (Lieberman, Raisor-Becker, Sotto, & Redle, 2018, Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders), 'Modelling category goodness judgments in children with residual sound errors' (Dugan, Silbert, McAllister, Preston, Sotto, & Boyce, 2019, Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics), and 'Fricatives at 18 months as a measure for predicting vocabulary and grammar at 24 and 30 months' (Sotto, Redle, Bandaranayake, Neils-Strunjas, & Creaghead, 2013, Journal of Communication Disorders). She co-authored the case study 'A toddler with delayed speech and developmental milestones' in The Communication Disorders Casebook (Redle & Sotto, 2011) and contributed multiple entries to the Encyclopedia of Clinical Neuropsychology, second edition (Sotto et al., 2018). Sotto has contributed to departmental committees, including the 2015-2016 Workload Committee for the CSD Department and the 2015 Advising Strategic Plan.
