Dr. Carrie Janerka is a Senior Lecturer and researcher in the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, at Curtin University. She holds the position of Course Coordinator and Emergency Stream Coordinator for the Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing postgraduate program. Additionally, she supervises students in the Master of Science (Advanced Nursing Practice). Janerka earned her PhD from Curtin University in 2025, with a thesis entitled "Person-centred care in the emergency department starts at triage," supervised by Professor Fenella Gill. Her academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Nursing (BN), Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nursing, Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching, and Master of Clinical Nursing (Emergency). Prior to her academic career, she served as a Research Nurse at Fiona Stanley Hospital within the Nursing and Midwifery Research Unit, South Metropolitan Health Service.
Janerka's research interests focus on enhancing patient-centred care in emergency and acute settings. Key areas include patient and nurse experiences of triage and waiting in emergency departments, development of person-centred care frameworks, prehospital telehealth applications, pain assessment in older adults with cognitive impairment, and research capacity among nurses and midwives. Her publications have significantly contributed to the field, with over 224 citations documented on ResearchGate. Notable works include: "Development of patient-centred care in acute hospital settings: A meta-narrative review" (Janerka et al., 2023, Journal of Advanced Nursing); "Prehospital telehealth for emergency care: A scoping review" (Janerka et al., 2023, Emergency Medicine Australasia); "Patient experience of emergency department triage: A systematic mixed studies review" (Janerka, 2024, International Emergency Nursing); "Co-Design of a Framework for Person-Centred Care at Emergency Department Triage and Waiting Room" (Janerka et al., 2025, Health Expectations); "A cross-sectional survey reporting nurses' perspectives of person-centred care at emergency department triage and waiting room in Australia" (Janerka et al., 2025, Australasian Emergency Care); and "Emergency clinicians' knowledge and practice of pain assessment for older adults with cognitive impairment: A cross-sectional study" (Janerka et al., 2025). In recognition of her contributions, Janerka received the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office Advancing the Profession Scholarship. Her work influences nursing education, practice, and policy by promoting evidence-based improvements in emergency care delivery.
