About Charl

Charl de Villiers is Professor of Accounting at the University of Auckland Business School in the Department of Accounting and Finance. He holds the title of Professor of Accounting and is internationally recognised for his work in sustainability accounting and integrated reporting. He earned an accounting degree from the University of Stellenbosch and qualified as a chartered accountant before pursuing an academic career. His doctoral research focused on environmental accounting. De Villiers previously held positions including Professor of Accounting at Auckland University of Technology and academic roles at the University of Waikato, Massey University, and institutions in South Africa. He serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Cape Town and the University of Pretoria. In 2016 he joined the University of Auckland as Professor of Accounting, initially in the Graduate School of Management and subsequently in the Department of Accounting and Finance.

De Villiers has authored or co-authored more than 100 refereed journal articles and over 400 research-based publications and presentations. He edited the books Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting (2018) and The Routledge Handbook of Integrated Reporting (2020). He has been recognised with the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) in the 2026 New Year Honours for services to accountancy. His research has received more than 21,000 citations. De Villiers has contributed as editor of Meditari Accountancy Research and founded the associated annual conference. He serves on the steering group of the University of Auckland Business School’s Centre for Inclusive Capitalism and has held various committee and editorial roles in the field of accounting.
