Charles Courtemanche is a Professor of Economics in the Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky and Director of the Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis in 2008, an M.A. in Economics from the same institution in 2003, and a B.S. in Economics magna cum laude from Centre College in 2002. His career includes service as Associate Professor of Economics with tenure at the University of Kentucky since 2018, Associate and Assistant Professor at Georgia State University's Andrew Young School of Policy Studies from 2012 to 2018, Assistant Professor at the University of Louisville from 2011 to 2012, and Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 2008 to 2011. Courtemanche holds affiliations as a Research Associate in the Health Economics Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research since 2015, Research Affiliate at the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA) since 2016, and Affiliated Faculty at the Georgia Health Policy Center since 2012. He is also Lead Editor of the Southern Economic Journal since 2019, with prior editorial roles including Co-Editor of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management from 2018 to 2020 and various positions at Economics and Human Biology.
A health economist and applied microeconomist, Courtemanche's research interests encompass the economics of obesity and nutrition, health insurance, COVID-19, tobacco, hospitals, and big box retailers. He has authored over 50 publications in journals such as the Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Health Affairs, Journal of Urban Economics, and Economic Journal.
