About Charley

Dr. Charley Budgeon is a Senior Lecturer and Biostatistician in the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Western Australia. She graduated from the University of Western Australia with a degree in Applied Statistics and earned her PhD in 2018 from the same institution, focusing on modelling long-term disease progression in Alzheimer’s disease. She commenced her current position as Lecturer and Biostatistician in February 2020, following roles as a researcher and statistical consultant at UWA's Centre for Applied Statistics. Additionally, she holds an honorary appointment in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, since 2020. Budgeon provides biostatistical support to staff, students, and external collaborators within the School of Population and Global Health and teaches biostatistics courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students. She co-supervises four PhD students and contributes to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.

Budgeon's research expertise lies in the applications of biostatistics to public health and medicine, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular research. This includes the design and analysis of clinical trials and large-scale epidemiological studies. Over her career, she has served as principal statistician on more than 50 peer-reviewed journal publications. Notable contributions include the LoDoCo2 Clinical Trial, an NHMRC-funded study worth $2.4 million published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and findings from the Flagship Telomere project published in Nature Genetics. Recent key publications are 'Bioprosthetic vs. mechanical prostheses in patients aged 50–70 years undergoing aortic valve replacement surgery: outcomes analysis from propensity score matching' (European Heart Journal Open, January 2026), 'Methods used to identify and classify medication-related admissions and readmissions to hospitals: A systematic review' (Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy, March 2026), 'Rationale for and design of the REsolution of LEft VENtricular thrombus (RELEVENT) Trial' (American Heart Journal, March 2026), 'Cost-effectiveness of low-dose colchicine in patients with chronic coronary disease in the Netherlands' (European Heart Journal: Quality of Care and Clinical Outcomes, January 2025), and 'Medication-focused telehealth interventions to reduce the hospital readmission rate: a systematic review' (Journal of Pharmaceutical Policy and Practice, February 2025).
