Dr. Charlie Parrish is a Professor of Sport Management and School Director for the School of Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Sport Management, and Hospitality and Tourism Management in Western Carolina University's College of Business. He earned his Ph.D. from George Mason University in 2014, M.S. from Georgia Southern University in 2007, and B.S. from Armstrong Atlantic State University in 2002. Parrish joined Western Carolina University following his doctoral studies and has progressed through the academic ranks, recently achieving promotion to full Professor. Prior to his academic career, he gained hands-on experience in the sport industry, including a role in the scouting department of a minor league baseball team. His leadership as School Director involves overseeing curriculum, faculty, and programs that prepare students for dynamic careers in sport management, marketing, entrepreneurship, hospitality, and tourism.
Parrish's research specializations encompass sport stadiums and arenas as corporate and social event venues, talent migration, international sport, and college athletics. He has made significant contributions to the scholarly discourse through publications such as the book Soccer around the World: A Cultural Guide to the World's Favorite Sport (2014), "Marketing Stadiums as Event Venues: Modified Balanced Scorecard Approach" in the Journal of Applied Sport Management (2014), "Monopsony Fracture: An Exploration of College Athletes' Name, Image, and Likeness Rights" co-authored in the Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport (2024), and "The Hidden Costs of Financing a National Football League Stadium with Municipal Bonds: The Case of Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas" in the Journal of Applied Sport Management (2022). His work examines critical issues like public financing of sports facilities and emerging rights for athletes. Parrish has received the Western Carolina University College of Business "Professor of Excellence" award and was selected for the 2024 WCU Senior Leadership Fellows Program, underscoring his impact on teaching, research, and institutional service. Through his roles, he influences the next generation of sport professionals and advances applied knowledge in the field.
