Charlotte Teneback, M.D., is Associate Professor of Medicine in Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program, Associate Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Interim Director of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine. Teneback earned her M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2004, a B.S. in Psychology from the College of Charleston, and attended Rhodes College. She completed her internal medicine residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from 2004 to 2007 and her Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the University of Vermont-Fletcher Allen Health Care from 2007 to 2010. She holds board certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine (2007), pulmonary medicine (2009), and critical care medicine (2011). Teneback joined the University of Vermont faculty as Clinical Instructor in 2010, advanced to Assistant Professor from 2011 to 2017, and has been Associate Professor since 2017. Her academic career includes service on the Curricular Affairs Committee and the Faculty Senate Professional Standards Committee.
Teneback's research expertise encompasses cystic fibrosis, non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, and general pulmonary medicine. She has contributed to key publications, including 'Lung Function and Microbiota in Cystic Fibrosis' in Microbiome (2020), 'Risk of Readmission and Mortality Following Hospitalization with Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure' in Lung (2020), and chapters on disease-specific approaches in pulmonary rehabilitation (2018) and COPD in Critical Care Secrets (6th edition, 2018). Recent works include investigations into nontuberculous mycobacteria in cystic fibrosis patients, personalized inhaled bacteriophage therapy for resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections (Nature Medicine, 2025), and multi-dimensional phenotyping of adult cystic fibrosis cohorts (Journal of Cystic Fibrosis, 2021). She co-authored the book Bronchiectasis (Springer, 2022). Teneback was recognized as a winner in the Dean's Celebration of Excellence in Research. She leads clinical trials improving cystic fibrosis treatments and directs the accredited Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at the University of Vermont Medical Center, contributing to advancements in respiratory microbiota remodeling and infection management in cystic fibrosis patients. She delivers seminars on cystic fibrosis care in Northern New England.
