Charu Abeysinghe Mudiyanselage is a Lecturer in the Curtin School of Nursing within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University. Her research focuses on online mindfulness-based interventions aimed at supporting informal carers, particularly those providing care to individuals living with dementia. This work addresses the challenges of caregiver burden and wellbeing through accessible digital health solutions.
In 2024, Abeysinghe Mudiyanselage published a mixed-methods systematic review in the journal Mindfulness titled "Enablers and Barriers of Online Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Informal Carers: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review." The study, preregistered on PROSPERO (CRD42023409311), followed the Joanna Briggs Institute systematic review approach. It included nine empirical studies—three quantitative, two qualitative, and four mixed-methods—sourced from eight databases. Critical appraisal was performed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, followed by thematic analysis. Key findings identified three subthemes for enablers: self-motivation, positive experiences of mindfulness, and supportive program structure and delivery. Corresponding barriers encompassed lack of self-motivation, external factors impeding participation, and inadequate program design. These factors were shown to be interrelated, providing evidence-based recommendations for designing effective online mindfulness programs to enhance carer participation and outcomes. The publication is open access under a Creative Commons license and has received 7 citations as recorded on Google Scholar.
Abeysinghe Mudiyanselage co-authored another significant paper, "Co-design of an Online Mindfulness Program for Informal Carers of People Living with Dementia: A Qualitative Study of Co-designers' Experience," published in Dementia in 2025. This qualitative research explored the experiences of stakeholders and individuals with lived carer experience in co-designing a tailored online mindfulness program. Her contributions extend to nursing education, where she coordinates undergraduate units such as NURS2001 Inquiry for Clinical Practice and NURS1000 Foundations of Clinical Practice at Curtin University. Through her scholarship and teaching, she advances knowledge in carer support and clinical nursing practice.
