Professor Cheng Han Tan, S.C., is a Professor of Law and Chief Strategy Officer at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds an LLB from NUS and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2004, becoming the first academic with an active counsel practice to receive this distinction. Professor Tan served as Dean of the NUS Faculty of Law from 2001 to 2011 and as Chairman of the E W Barker Centre for Law and Business from 2012 to 2019. He subsequently served as Dean and Chair Professor of Commercial Law at the City University of Hong Kong School of Law from 2019 to 2022. He has also held positions including Judge of the Military Court of Appeal and Specialist Judge, and he is admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor in Singapore.
Professor Tan is recognized as an authority in agency law and company law. His recent publications include “The Metaverse beyond the internet” (2023) in Law, Innovation and Technology and “Vicarious Liability in the Law of Agency” (2022) in the Journal of Business Law. He has authored and edited numerous books, book chapters, and articles on agency law, contract, corporate law, and related fields. In 2024, he received the C C Tan Award from the Law Society of Singapore for exemplifying honesty, fair play, and integrity. He maintains affiliations with WongPartnership as Senior Counsel and Senior Consultant, and he serves as Chairman of NTUC First Campus.
