Cheri Carter, PhD, LCSW, serves as Associate Professor of Instruction and BSW Program Director in Temple University’s School of Social Work within the Barnett College of Public Health. She earned her PhD in Family Studies from the University of Delaware in 2005, with a dissertation titled 'The Perceived Development of Resilience of Old-Old Black American Women, aged 85 years and older.' Her Master of Social Work degree is from Widener University (2000), and she holds a BA in Philosophy with a minor in Art Studio-Photography from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania (1993). Joining Temple’s faculty in 2004, Carter has taught a wide array of practice and Human Behavior in the Social Environment (HBSE) courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, including in the university’s general education program such as 'Human Behavior & the Photographic Image.' Since 2010, she has directed the BSW program, emphasizing curriculum development and innovative, non-traditional teaching methods. Prior to academia, she held various clinical social work positions from 1996 to 2004, including Outpatient Therapist at Northwestern Human Services, Mobile Therapist and Behavioral Specialist Consultant at Warren E. Smith Health Centers, Clinician at an adolescent substance abuse treatment facility, and Care Manager for long-term care options at Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, serving children, adolescents, adults, older adults, and families.
Carter’s scholarly interests center on human behavior in the social environment, aging, family and individual resilience, intergenerational issues, and the use of documentary portrait photography in education. She co-authored 'Provider Perspectives on Integrating Systems for Health Equity' in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (2025). She has co-facilitated workshops at CSWE Annual Program Meetings, including 'The Topic-Focused, Case Study Approach: Developing a New Framework for HBSE Content' (2015) and proposals on interprofessional collaboration and social justice. Carter received the General Education Team Teaching Award Grant ($7,500, 2010), General Education Interdisciplinary Course Development Stipend ($5,000, 2009), and was nominated for Undergraduate Academic Advising Awards (2013) and inducted as Honorary Member of Alpha Delta Mu (2013). She chairs the BSW Committee, serves on school search, promotion, and reaffirmation committees, and is a member of the Provost’s Teaching Academy, contributing to faculty development through workshops, mentoring, and service on university committees.
