Chi-Ren Shyu is a professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia, holding the Paul K. and Dianne Shumaker Professorship. He serves as Director of the MU Institute for Data Science and Informatics (MUIDSI), Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Strategic Initiatives in the College of Engineering, and President of the MU Graduate Faculty Senate from Fall 2024 to Summer 2025. Shyu earned his PhD and MS degrees from Purdue University and BS degree from Feng Chia University. Since joining the University of Missouri in 2000, he has led the development of interdisciplinary graduate programs including the MS in Data Science and Analytics and PhD in Informatics, with emphasis areas in bioinformatics, health informatics, and geospatial informatics. MUIDSI comprises 68 core faculty from 24 departments and schools, supporting more than 160 graduate students.
Shyu's research focuses on biomedical informatics, explainable AI, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and spatial Big Data analytics. He is the Principal Investigator of Mizzou’s NSF CyberCorps Scholarship for Service project ($3.6 million), including a supplement for microelectronics training. He has organized and chaired technical program committees for IEEE conferences such as HealthCom 2011 in Columbia, Missouri; BigMM 2016 in Taipei, Taiwan; BIBM 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri; and BIBE 2018 in Taichung, Taiwan. His awards include the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, MU College of Engineering Faculty Research Award and Teaching Excellence Award, Faculty Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurial Award, UM System President’s Leadership Award, seven Computer Science teaching awards from 2001 to 2006, and 2022 Faculty Alumni Award. Shyu is an elected Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (FACMI), Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA), Senior Member of IEEE, and member of Eta Kappa Nu. He represents the University of Missouri on the Southeast Conference Artificial Intelligence Consortium. His work has garnered over 7,000 citations on Google Scholar.
