Chris Fernandes is a Professor of Computer Science at Union College, where he teaches a variety of courses including CSC 120: Programming on Purpose, CSC 270: Computer Organization, CSC 234: Data Visualization, CSC 340: Introduction to Database Systems, CSC 380: User Interfaces, and others such as bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and capstone design projects. His academic background includes a B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Prior to his current position, Fernandes taught at Colby College during 2000-2001, offering courses like CS 393: Reading Seminar on Databases, CS 151: Structured Programming, CS 113: Great Ideas in Computer Science, and CS 375: Analysis of Algorithms. Earlier, from 1993 to 2000, he instructed CS 120: Introduction to Computers and Information Technology at Northwestern University across multiple terms.
Fernandes' research interests encompass human-computer interaction, semantics of undo, semantic integration of heterogeneous databases, distributed query processing, database management systems, data mediation, and interface design. He has co-authored several publications, including 'Simulated Conference Submissions: A Technique to Improve Student Attitudes about Writing' with Aaron G. Cass in Frontiers in Education (2008); 'Using Task Models for Cascading Selective Undo' with Aaron G. Cass in the 5th International Workshop on Task Models and Diagrams for User Interface Design (2006); 'An Empirical Evaluation of Undo Mechanisms' with Aaron G. Cass and Andrew Polidore at the 4th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (2006); 'Modeling Dependencies for Cascading Selective Undo' with Aaron G. Cass at the Workshop of the Tenth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (2005); 'Data Warehousing from the Web' with Michael Whalen in Proceedings of the American Society for Engineering Education (2004); and 'Discovering and Resolving User Intent in Heterogeneous Databases' with Lawrence Henschen in Fundamenta Informaticae (2001). In 2006, Fernandes and Aaron Cass received an NSF grant. He serves on tenure committees and mentors student summer research projects at Union College.
