Christina R. Miller is the Oklahoma Medicaid Endowed Professor of Health and Professor in the Anne and Henry Zarrow School of Social Work at the University of Oklahoma, where she coordinates the Ruth Knee Institute for Transformative Scholarship. She earned her Ph.D. in Social Work from Florida State University in 2009, with a dissertation on improving post-school outcomes for students with disabilities through service-learning and civic engagement. She also holds an MSW from Missouri State University in 2002 with a focus on family health and a B.S. in Psychology and Sociology from Southwest Baptist University in 2000. Before entering academia, she served as a school social worker for the Willard School District in Missouri from 2002 to 2005 and as a service coordinator for adults with developmental disabilities at the Springfield Regional Center in 2002.
Dr. Miller joined the University of Oklahoma in 2009 as an Assistant Professor, advancing to Associate Professor in 2015 and Professor in 2025. She has held leadership positions including Acting Director (2018-2019), Associate Director (2017-2022), Assistant Director (2016-2017), and Undergraduate Program Coordinator (2014-2017). She is LEND core faculty since 2022 and teaches courses in generalist practice, theory, and evaluation. Her research specializations include transition services for youth with disabilities, experiential learning, community-based participatory research, disaster response, homelessness, housing gaps, and health disparities. Key projects encompass the GirlPower Photovoice Project as principal investigator (2011-2012), Transition Specialist Training Grant and Technology and Self-Determination Project as co-principal investigator (2011-2014), and statewide housing assessments aiding Oklahoma's homelessness initiatives. Notable publications are 'A model of hope as a protective measure to lower burnout and secondary traumatic stress among employees working in developmental and intellectual disabilities services' (Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities, 2024), 'Building international partnerships among helping professions that advance educationally communal internationalization and global competencies' (Frontier: International Journal of Study Abroad, 2024), 'Building a bridge: Exploring the intersection of social work, architecture, and regional and city planning for stronger communities' (Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship, 2024), and 'Increased domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic: India’s response' (Development Policy Review, 2023). Awards include the Junior Faculty Summer Research Award (2011) and Emerging Scholar in Service-Learning (2008). She is a consulting editor for Children and Schools and serves on the CSWE Commission on Practice Methods, while co-teaching study abroad in Japan on disaster preparedness.
